In an ever-changing world, the concept of taking care of ourselves seems almost like a luxury. We're overwhelmed by a multitude of obligations, and often have the unfortunate habit of placing others before ourselves.

When we travel, we listen to the safety procedure on planes, which states that if the oxygen masks fall off during the flight, we must put our own on before helping others.

Why is it so tough to apply this simple rule when it comes down to us? Isn't it an indispensable element of a healthy, fulfilling life after all? We tend to prioritize our careers, our relationships, our responsibilities, while neglecting ourselves. Yet it's essential to nourish our mind, body and soul in order to maintain a balance.

These three elements are interlinked, and if we ignore even one of them, it will have a domino effect and eventually something will go wrong or be deficient.

I love girly nights, where girlfriends and I give each other facials and foot treatments while listening music or just having dinners with friends. It revitalizes my spirit, and afterwards I feel so good inside.

About ten days ago, I was going through a difficult time on all three levels... Someone was there and listened to me when I tell him about my exhausting day. He said: “It's encouraging to know that there are still some good people out there. His words had the effect of a balm on my heart, as I acted without thinking about what needed to be done. I called the 911 afterwards and escorted a neighbor to the ER. On that day, I would have taken an 8-minute plus a hug!

This intrinsic need to help my fellows is strong, as I have a high level of empathy. If I didn't take care of myself first, I wouldn't be able to be there for others in more gloomy times.

By taking care of my mind, body and soul, I reduce stress, improve my physical and mental health and maintain healthy relationships with friends and neighbours.

It's often difficult to take care of ourselves when time is precious and demands are enormous. It's not selfish to prioritize yourself, to refocus and vitalize yourself, after which you have the energy to help others.

Self-care is a personal journey, and it transforms life for the better. Personally, I walk every day, I enjoy good friendships afterwards, and I try to be grateful for life even when it doesn't turn out the way I'd like. Happiness may be a destination, but joy is a process. Let's try to get there!
